Why Choose the Law Office of Andrew Y. Schroeder?
1. As noted above, we can provide areas of expertise not found at most business law firms. In addition to general business law, we are also able to provide Intellectual Property services such as Patent Law, Trademark Law, Copyright Law, Trade Secrets, as well as other attendant issues. We are licensed to practice Patent Law before the United States Patent & Trademark Office and can draft your Patent and Trademark applications before the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). At most business law firms, Patent and Trademark work must be outsourced to other law firms.
2. You will deal directly with the attorney who will work on your case. Unlike other law firms where your important needs are shoveled off to a paralegal, intern, or first year associate, you can rest assured that your work will be tasked to the attorney you will deal with. By working directly with the attorney tasked to work on your case your legal needs will not be overcharged and lost in the shuffle.
3. We will not nickel and dime you.
Most attorneys working at small, medium, and large law firms are under intense pressure to bill hours to your invoice regardless of whether those services are actually necessary or advisable. Unlike those law firms, we try to offer as many flat-rate services as possible where appropriate. By working on a flat-rate fee schedule, you will rest assured that you will not be bilked in order to fulfill some quota.
WHY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IS IMPORTANT
by Andrew Y. Schroeder, Esq.
Perhaps the prime driver of the US Economy over the past century has been innovation. The telephone, the automobile, the personal computer, the Internet and its websites, and biotechnology have kept the USA the leader of the world in innovation as well as the largest economy in the world. These innovations would not be commercially viable nor monetizable without strong laws safeguarding Intellectual Property.
The three pillars of Intellectual Property: Patents, Trademarks, and Copyrights help inspire innovation through various incentives such as time-limited monopolies. Without Intellectual Property, advances in the life sciences, pharmaceuticals, and green technology would not be possible for lack of financial resources propagating their development and commercialization.
There has been some debate in recent years of the putative "death of manufacturing" in America. Some critics have argued that high paying manufacturing jobs have been outsourced to other countries and have been supplanted by creating financial instruments and ideas with little or no true value.
To the contrary, a recent U.N. report states that the USA is the world's largest manufacturer. In point of fact, the USA produces almost twice as much value as China. Instead of being the dominant car or television manufacturer, the US is increasingly manufacturing high-end products like artificial-heart valves.
Whereas most manufacturing jobs pay relatively low hourly rates, the seamstresses who individually assemble these artificial heart valves are highly skilled and well paid. The meticulous and precision work requires 8-12 hours of hand-sewing, and up to 1,800 stitches made under the lens of a microscope. Some of these workers require up to a year of training.
These high-end, well-compensated jobs would not be possible without the innovation to create the blue prints to those products. Moreover, the skills required to manufacture these jobs require a well-educated workforce.
The hopes of a rebound in the US economy will hinge on several exciting US-borne innovations which will require substantial Intellectual Property protections. MEMS (microelectromechanical systems), cloud computing, green technology, and other pipeline pharmaceuticals hold promise that the US can regain its innovative hegemony in the global marketplace.
